Just heard their was a spin off of a drama adaption being made, so just here to leave a review in case anyone new is interested in reading manhwa was a let down after finishing it. I tried to hope that it would get better as I read on, but like others I couldn't go on and just skipped to the ending only to see that the ending was also a huge let down too. For one, the female lead's character totally flipped 360 as the story prolonged. She became a damsel in distress. Yep, that's right! After the strong start on her personality at the beginning, the author just drifted her character off and made her into a weak female lead that needed to be saved all the time. There was repetitive plot being added, annoying extra characters that were only just there to drag the story and the characters all lacked emotions as the story prolonged. They either had a straight face or just a few blushes, but that's about it. The only good thing about this manhwa was the art. The plot could have been something more, but the author didn't use it to her advantage and it turned into just a huge mess after, just so she could continue to milk more money from her best selling manhwa. I know earning money is important, but when the plot and characters start to lose itself, that's when you know you need to end the story. But what she did instead was dragged and prolonged it, when it could have ended on a nice note without adding unnecessary drama that didn't need to be in the it's not worth reading if you're looking to read something with more in depth plot, strong character development, and strong female leads. If you like the art and can look pass the draggy plot, you can give this a try. If you're looking for something similar to this that has awesome plot and characters, then I recommend "Savage Garden", "Saver", or "Otoyomegatari" though Otoyomegatari is more slice of life mixed with politics and mature content. I'll also recommend similar novels fantasy or historical plot themes too with strong female leads that are worth reading - 1/2 Prince also has a manhua adaption, Descent of the Phoenix also has a manhua adaption, My Disciple Died Yet Again, Accompanying the Phoenix, and Jiang Hu’s Road is Curved.... Last updated on December 27th, 2018, 523pm I really love the art style although characters can get confusing in the 40+ chapter rn but I still don't get why they don't let Soah know about Habaek's curse. I stopped reading this manhwa for years now and had recently picked it up again. Reading it reminded me why I had stopped in the first place. Soah is atypical of a mortal and having her as the protagonist is no different from having Bella from twilight as a main character. However, the side stories and characters made me read on. I found myself skipping Soah/Habaek scenes as they were a drag. The author really knows how to make things tragic and complex albeit long-winded. Plus point to Habaek's parents. Better love story than the main romance plot. Likewise, i think the art is gorgeous. The beginning of this manhwa is very interesting and romantic as well. The male character is introduced as a cursed person and the female character is introduced as someone with a personality. But then ... somehow 15-30 chapters in the female character loses this personality and she becomes this damsel that doesn't really do anything - making the manhwa boring since she's supposed to be the main character. As you continue on, there's a bunch of names thrown at you and it gets too confusing to follow, especially when there's not much action happening. It made me a bit sad ; the intro had so much potential and the artwork is breathtaking. I suggest you just read the first 15 chapters until you lose interest or continue on! bunch of gods without purpose and work constantly harrasing low powers people amd human..i just dont get it why soah is contantly bullied and tested by gods cmon man she is human.....gods gets angry, jealous, irritated on humans.......wtf....there a lot difference in human and godand helll,,,,,basically the demons are also given the status of god here...... It's finally been getting better, but it's been dragged out far too long so far. The artwork is impeccable and absolutely fabtastic, but that's taking over the whole theme of this manga. Not the mouse over to view a girl gets put into the ocean to be eaten up by the water as a sacrifice to the water god to become his bride. She surprisingly really does go over to the water gods country. She then meets a little boy as well as a older man. The boy she knows to be her next husband.. The man is a mystery. After many hardships she finally figured out the he is the same person and they go to the main palace to get married. His mother is always trying to kill her. Then the tree of life they have is burned down.. Because of jealousy over the water god. Then the witch of the west?! Ends up trying to kill her for being mortal and cursed the water god to being a mere mortal himself and changes him so that around her he stays a kid. And only when he is not he is fine. They then go to her human world. After having shock that she comes back and with a child she ends up running away to be cared for by a different family because her father still acts as a wicked man.. During this time they insure a woman trying to claim herself as the real wife of the Water god as well as a man trying to take the wife away. The water gods father dies but doesn't die. And the mother is forced into the hands of the main palaces king. The mother tries to kill the wife which leads to her sons near death. He is given the last peach to revive him.. Then the mother tells the wife to promise to leave him. The mother then convinces the witch to release the curse from her son. He becomes himself again and they finally go back home to the water country. They consummate their marriage and the she leaves him. It's now four years later and the gods are at war. The palace king is losing and is trying to get the water god on his side. The palace kings son is protecting the wife and now the daughter! But because he is he was discovered. The water god was sent to the mortal realm to fetch the son... But ended up bumping into his daughter instead.. What's next?? Habaek has now found his daughter and Soah. He also is aware the kid is his and now so does the other gods in some way. ... Last updated on January 26th, 2016, 1242am It starts off pretty well. The art is interesting and so are the plot and characters. But I think that the author's mind went blank after 60~ish chapters and the story started to repeat. Let them be happy already and move the plot elsewhere! In 90~ish chapters, the heroine becomes unbearable. She already started losing her appeal in 30~ish chapters, but 90's made me want to kill her. How nice would everything be if only she died!Read the manga until you can bear it and then drop it. It's not worth after the initial chapters. And, I almost forgot, for a manga that is about realm of gods, it surprisingly lacks characters. Just a few who are always there and run the disappointed. Ive dropped this. It started off interesting and the art is absolutely gorgeous! But the plot is tired constanly a back and forth of the Soah being indecisive. After 133 chapters Id expect something new but nope same story. Plus the plot is super convulted with a million characters to keep track of. Other than the art theres not much going for this comic at this point. i read this manhwa since 2011, and at that time, i was really crazy about this manhwa, always looking forward to new release, and so... o yeah, the art are gorgeous, strong character. Even it's like typical shoujo manga, i mean "human-god relationship", which it's impossible but always interesting to read. But right now, i dropped!!! I can't understand why this story became very tedious and long-winded. i don't know why the author drag it so much,, look at the couple, the problem more and more complicated and irritates me so much. sometimes the author put the problems a lot of problems, which is impossible and not important at all, even to think about it. when this story will finish? who knows!! i tired of waiting. _.-._ The art makes me so jealous of the mangaka's skills... Everything is so elegant!!! omg! Main characters are also enjoyable!but.... after the first 10 or 20 chapters, the plot just becomes a bowl of mush...... so many side characters appear with hidden intentions that I just ccan't swallow it all down.... Plus, many of them have the same face! WHAT THE HECK? Overall though, I would recommend people to try the manga out, at least until chapter 25 or so.... and then give up if the story becomes too overwhelming.... Bride of the Water God is my k-dramaland heartache for 2017 since I am rooting for its artistic promise – only to be disappointed for failing to achieve it. There are a few addictive runs, but the cliff-hangers and direction of the supernatural plot kills the budding love, just when you think it is finally settling to a decent narration. Title Bride of the Water God Distributor TVN Theme Fantasy, Romance Comedy Length 16 Episodes Broadcast Period 03 July 2017 – 22 August 2017 Overall Rating Rewatch Value Plus Factors Superb Romance Plot, Heart-stopping Kiss Scenes Oh No Moments Diverted Writing, Circling Fantasy Plot Related Dramas Goblin, The Legend of the Blue Sea, Black Knight I keep hoping for a miraculous spurt, but the writing remains unaware of its sporadic trajectory. Savor the sweet moments and sigh at the nonsense events. Bride of the Water God gives you sufficient reasons to enjoy the love affair, yet the picture as a whole, leaves you bereft of emotions. Highlights Strong Love Storyline The romance between Habaek and So Ah establishes an understanding that it is not bound to happen because of the different worlds they live in. But they reach to a point to be with each other while they can. The love story is the sole reason why I patiently endure this drama. The transition from amusing bickering to a picturesque relationship is what made the story bearable amidst the scattered stride of the characters along with awkward chronicle twist. No holds bar kisses + Sweet Lines If Nam Joo Hyuk makes you swoon, then prepare to drool on the intense and lingering lip lock frames. The romantic scenes are supported by affectionate lines that are perfect for those defining love moments. On that note, I am baffled how the lyrical writing is seamlessly functioning on the important love confrontation scenes, yet when the poignant scenes subside, the screenplay reverts to boring conversations that do not link to the story at all. Redeeming Finale Kick I remained steadfast until the closing week, hoping for a glimmer of light that would calm my downcast soul. Habaek appeased my heart by showing a synergy of the romance and fantasy which finally showed up in the dying minutes of the story, when I was just wanting a fan service and apology to forget everything that have happened. Nevertheless, viewers received a happy ending treat after all those dissatisfying phases. Drawbacks Weak Fantasy Plot Layering Back stories are meant to support the narrative but the placement is important. You can chip in a little every now and then. But if you put it when there’s like 45 minutes left, even fan service moments won’t salvage the story anymore. I couldn’t seem to go as high as I could to the romance ride, because it kept inserting the fantasy premise, which consistently failed to provide matching backstories to the love story conflict. The secondary characters playing deity roles were weakly sketched that you could lift them out of the story, and it would still be a working narrative. Excessively Diverted Writing To think the storyline has one evident problem, the writing can’t seem to grasp the perfect hinge to cure the imbalance of the love tale. I mentioned how the sweet lines are stunning on the heart-fluttering frames, but then it fails to salvage the prevailing problems of the story. I picture a god-mortal romance to be romanticized. But the hero, branded to be an exceptional deity, is stripped of his powers so that so he can’t even dote on the prototype heroine saddled with financial problems. Emotionless Cliff Hangers and Misplaced Conflicts Chapters in Bride of the Water God usually ended without any exclamation mark. It just fades to oblivion without adding plot thickening elements. I even suspected that the writer was doing house chores while scribbling it so he kept setting it aside, leaving the viewers wondering if the episode was really done or not. Fusing in the irrational issues of the supporting leads that are totally unrelated to the resolution track is another culprit for the poor chapter showing. It is easy to hate and forget the villains on this drama because the attempts to understand the impetus toward their actions are pointless. Ruse, bends and curves pile up like there is no tomorrow as the story unfolds. A few questions raised and situations presented are left unexplained. I could go on with all the bullet points that were missed in the story. But since I want to move on as fast as I can from this drama, just prepare yourself for a battlefield of unfinished business in the world of Habaek and So Ah. Quick Plot Roundup In preparation for his crowning as the King of Realms of God, Habaek Nam Joo Hyuk, a water god crosses the world of humans to find three heavenly stones kept by deities living in the mortal world. Unfortunately, he loses his powers when he lands on earth with his attendant, so they leave with no choice but to seek the descendant from a family, who vowed to serve the lineage of gods. The supposed human servant turns out to be a psychiatrist, Yoon So Ah Shin Se Kyung, who is currently burdened with money constraints. As Habaek is used to having the world under his feet, he struggles on a new sphere that does not revolve around him. But his innate godly qualities are quick to adapt to human activities even when he only sees it done for the first time. He successfully tracks down water goddess Moo Ra Krystal, who has been obsessed with him, and sky god Bi Ryum Gong Myung, whose object of affection is Moo Ra. Habaek deduces how his servant has the ability to summon his powers due to incidents that involve saving her from near-death experiences. She eventually gives in to the crazy idea of her connection to a supposed supernatural being and lets them live in her house. While adjusting to her new world of deities, her new chaebol friend Shin Hu Ye joins the godly party as a half-human-half-deity, who later harbors affection towards her. Habaek’s Journey Little by little, Habaek and So Ah fall into a romantic yet bittersweet connection. But knowing the exceptional situation, they try to restrict their feelings. But as love flows freely, they confront their fears and agree to make the most of the time when they can be together. Habaek finally traces the missing earth god whom he needs for the remaining stone. He sadly prepares for his return to the gods’ kingdom. He inevitably reports back on the completion of his mission but misses the woman he loves. He asks for a quick leave before the coronation to visit So Ah, who is trying hard to live the days without him – with all her might. Her strong front dissolves as soon as she sees Habaek at his usual waiting spot outside her house. They agree to achieve a proper closure for their feelings toward each other. Just when time is waning fast for the lovers, the deities uncover the unfortunate fate of So Ah’s father, whom she has hated for most of her life, as she assumed that he abandoned the family. It turns out that on the night when So Ah attempted to kill herself, his father as a god’s servant was granted by a wish, leading him to witness his daughter’s suicide attempt. He jumped into the water to save her but lost his life in the process. The deities convene to convince Habaek not to proceed with his plan to use his borrowed earthly power as he needs it to return to the realm of the gods. But the love for his cherished woman wins, and he forcedly kisses her to give his grace. They bury her father properly as So Ah is given a chance to make one wish as a servant. The High Priest unexpectedly gate-crashes their gathering, hinting how the future water god is able to solve the riddle handed down to him, of how hard it is to save one mortal much more than the whole world. So Ah utters her final wish to have Habaek by her side until the remaining days of her life. Recommendation There are a lot of poignant events in Bride of the Water God which are overshadowed by the lapses in the story framework. The central problem of the romance impossibility between a human and an immortal is unreasonably amplified by throwing in fragments of character-driven conflicts that do not involve the loving couple. If truth be told, those side stories and unnecessary supporting characters turn the plot messier. It is not visually unpleasant, to be honest. However, the narrative requires the viewers to be understanding of the plethoric ideas which happen recklessly in the story. That has been my big complaint for the series. But then again, I applaud how they settle on a romantic fix that works well, with how they lean firmly on the pragmatic belief of the drama. I question why they pace back and forth when they can crown Habaek as a King. Then since he is infamously powerful, he can visit So ah at his will. But when the resolution is revealed, the disarming of Habaek’s supernatural abilities finally makes sense to me. Bride of the Water God is hard to deconstruct as a viewer. It does have good and bad points, so you have to rely on your patience to finish it. If Nam Joo Hyuk is your cup of tea, it is still a tolerable watch.
